WHO IS IT FOR?
Private and state schools with 2-5 hours of English per week
• Teachers looking for an easy-to-teach blended learning course
• Teachers who want to incorporate more game-based learning
Poptropica
Key words: active learning, blended learning, online learning environment, CUL, assessment for learning methodology (AL), game-based learning, learn through play
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?
• Poptropica has been designed as a course in which all the components are aligned to provide best practice methodology and an innovative digital environment, both inside and out of the classroom.
• Poptropica English Island Adventure Game gives students an interactive online game-based learning experience where they learn through play. Children follow the characters through their book, while listening to stories, singing songs, communicating and playing games along the way. Students will engage in safe, closed-chat dialogs with the characters they meet and will practice target language from the units. They will also follow instructions to help them solve puzzles and learn supplementary language along the way as it is designed first and foremost to boost vocabulary.
• Ongoing storyline with fun, exciting characters to guide learners through the curriculum
• Cross curricular teaching lessons (CLIL) included with TB tips and external exam preparation embedded.
• The learning adventure, based on each of the Poptropica English islands, is a path which represents how confident the pupil feels about a particular learning objective. Using this poster in class enables pupils to develop self-assessment skills by reflecting on how well they can remember vocabulary, for example, from the lesson or unit. It can also help gather evidence for the teacher on who is confident about the lesson and who needs more practice. The learning adventure poster can be put up in the classroom and the image used in a sequence of activities in conjunction with both the Pupil's Book and accompanying teaching notes, as well as in Poptropica English World for class presentation. The four steps are: Let's go!, I'm on my way!, I'm almost there!, and I've arrived!
• Assessment for Learning methodology (AfL): Assessment for Learning techniques and activities have been integrated into each lesson to understand how pupils are doing and help them improve. These activities give pupils an awareness of what and how they are learning, while giving you the teacher lots of opportunities to assess how each pupil is doing and make decisions about how to help pupils improve.
• The PPP (Presentation, Practice and Production) method ensures the lesson sequence is clear, easy to follow and works in a structured way. The Poptropica English unique '5Ps' approach also adds Personalisation and Pronunciation.
Focus: blended learning environment and incorporating technology Approach: Game-based learning
